11th Founder's day- 6th February 2005

"Udayan Care celebrated its 11th Founder's Day on 6th February 2005 at New Delhi's prestigious India International Centre. On this occasion, world famous social activist and an Arya Samaj leader, Swami Agnivesh announced a donation of US$123,000, assured to him by his wellwishers overseas, to Udayan Care so that it could work for the tsunami affected children and bring the same quality of care to them as it has been doing in Delhi and the adjacent NCR region in its 5 residential homes.
Speaking on this occasion, the chief guest at the function, Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs. Sheila Dixit, lauded the good work being done by Udayan Care.

Screened on this occasion was a beautiful film capturing a "slice of life" of the children in Udayan Care. On this occasion, four distinguished people from various fields were given Awards of Distinction for their meritorious service to the disadvantaged by the Chief Minister of Delhi. Awardees included, Principal S. L. Jain (Mahavira Sr. Model School), Mr. Jai Zharotia (noted artist), Dr. Navin Dang (pathologist), and Dr. Nilima Sabharwal (philanthropist) of Home of Hope.

The program ended with Udayan Care children singing a beautiful Udayan Family song. But this was actually the beginning, as the function touched many chords in the hearts of the distinguished gathering assembled there.




Udayan Shalini Fellowship Workshops

Quarterly motivational workshops are an integral part of the growth and development of our Udayan Shalini fellows. Between January 2004 and January 2005, six workshops were conducted on the following topics: Self Motivation, Determination, Self Learning, How I Choose to Study Social Work, Domestic Violence, Career Counselling and Biotechnology.



New Years, December 31, 2004

Mr. Anupam Nath invited children from all the 5 homes to his "Indian cottage Industry", to celebrate New Year. He showed his grandfather's collection of vintage cars. All the children got the opportunity to see the vintage cars of Adolf Hitler, Maharaja of Kapurthala, Maharaja of Ayodhaya etc. and many Mughal miniatures



Visit to a Pepsi factory

This was a learning experience apart from being a fun trip to witness their favourite drink in the making.




Celebration of Festivals

Rakhi, Bhai dooj, Diwali, Eid, Christmas… the list is endless. All these festivities especially help children feel like a family. This year they even celebrated Halloween, courtesy our foreign volunteers!




Visitors from Ryan International School

Hundred children from Ryan International School, Mumbai visited the Udayan Ghar at Greater Noida and entertained our children with two beautiful dance performances. Our children were the perfect hosts and entertained them in return.



Public Performances

Some of the children dramatized a play 'Changu Mangu' at the Kamani auditorium at the silver jubilee celebrations of Umang.

The boys of Mayur Vihar ghar put up a play organized by Chetna, another NGO. They worked on this with Mr. Rice in March through till April. This play was on Child rights. The boys thought of the script on their own with a little input from Mr. Rice

Six of our children were given the honour of singing Saraswati Vandana in the presence of the President of India, Dr. Abdul A.P.J. Kalaam, at an international medical conference at Vigyan Bhawan, organized by our Trustee, Dr. S.K. Sarin, in the presence of more than 3000 people.


Setting up of the Sat Krishna Udayan Ghar V for Boys in Gurgaon

Udayan Care opened its fifth Ghar at Gurgoan in September 2004. It is funded by the Sat Krishna Charitable Trust. The trust takes care of infrastructure and recurring costs. The home has given a new life to 11 boys looked after by a caregiver couple.



USF(Udayan Shalini Fellowships)-September 17th 2004

The Hon'ble Lt. Governor of Delhi Mr. B.L. Joshi administered the oath and distributed the first cheques to the third batch of 125 Fellows. Speaking on the occasion, he congratulated Udayan Care for the commitment to creating opportunities for girls who have need, ambition as well as talent.
Four visually impaired, two hearing impaired and several girls with locomotor disability qualified as Fellows, through open merit. Executive Committee Member Mr. S.L. Jain, Principal of MSMS was also felicitated for his winning the CBSE Award for Outstanding Teacher.



Workshops

August 2004-
The older children attended a workshop on HIV/AIDS and Sexual Abuse conducted by Breakthrough, an NGO committed to building awareness about domestic violence.

July - Sept 2004- Two resident volunteers from Australia- Kristen Benson and Nina Fairlie, conducted workshops with Greater Noida children, including group activities to inculcate team spirit in them. They also gifted some sporting equipment; it has been an ongoing lesson in itself, as the children are learning the value of sharing and playing together.

25th September- Torque Communications Pvt. Ltd, a PR agency working on India -Japan initiatives, organized a workshop. All the children participated in it and got a wonderful opportunity to learn the Japanese paper folding craft of origami.



Movie Screenings

Children of various Homes watched "Main Hoon Na", "Ella Enchanted" and "Fida" courtesy the management of Odeon and PVR Cinemas and our international volunteers during the summer.



June trip to Manali

The Udayan Care children had a marvelous summer holiday at Manali, made possible through the munificence of our Executive Committee Member Vipin Chawla. They trekked, visited with 'nature' and generally had a very good time. Most importantly, such holidays help in family bonding.



Artists for Children Movement

As part of our celebration of our First Decade; an event - 'Artists for Children Movement' was held. Through it 35 established and renowned artists worked with students of 34 different schools and one Udayan Ghar to create 5" by 3.5" canvasses. The 35 canvasses opened for public viewing at AIFACS, Rafi Marg, on 29th April 2004.

All paintings exhibit the freshness of young spirits, guided by the experience of the senior artists. Most of them depict sentiments like Hope, Desire, Contentment and Liberation. Among the artists who participated were Jatin Das, Anupam Sood, Arpana Caur, Subroto Kundu, Umesh Verma, Paramjit Singh, Prem Singh, Ingrid Pitzer, Bulbul Sharma, Nirmal Kapoor, Jagadish Dey, Mohan Singh and many others. Prof. Jai Zharotia put it all together.

Mr. B.K. Chaturvedi, Secretary Petroleum, GOI, inaugurated the show in the presence of a distinguished gathering that included over 25 eminent artists. Mr. K.G. Sathyasingan, GM, Punjab National Bank was the Guest of Honour. A special Commemorative Catalogue with reproductions of all the 35 canvasses on art paper alongwith a brief bio-data of the artist was released.



Wheelchair Distribution, March 22nd 2004

The founder of the WheelChair Foundation, Mr.Ken Behringer has the power to change the lives of the needy.
His organisation distributes wheelchairs with the unambiguous knowledge that it has the potential and power to change lives of the needy. He has recently donated 5000 wheelchairs in Afghanistan and at the time of the Bhuj earthquake, he gifted 2000 wheelchairs there. This organisation has chosen Udayan Care as their partners in the mission of distributing 1000 wheelchairs in India.

Mr. Behringer who was here for a very short visit, spent time at Jagshanti Udayan Care. He distributed 15 wheelchairs in a simple function to beneficiaries who had been identified by us. Some of the beneficiaries were mentally challenged children, children with locomotive disablities, people from the slums identified by ASRA.



Bringing in a Decade of Service

Udayan Care celebrated a decade of its service on 14 February 2004. This occasion was celebrated at Jagshanti Udayan Care at Greater Noida.

After the traditional Lamp lighting by Chief Guest Mr. Ashwini Arora, Joint Managing Director of LT Overseas Ltd. and Guest of Honour Prof. John Martin, a visiting Fulbright scholar from USA and formerly with Stanford University, the programme started with a swing. A heartening feature of the celebrations was the participation of over fifty neighbours from around our Ghar.

Udayan Care children presented a well-received variety entertainment programme in which almost all the children participated. Our Managing Trustee Dr. Kiran Modi made a moving report about how a pain and a dream had evolved to our present situation of four homes for children and 120 girls in our outreach Udayan Shalini Fellowship programme where we support disadvantaged girls who live in their own families but have poor or inadequate quality of life. She specially thanked the trustees, mentor mothers, volunteers and professional team who were with her through these first ten years.
The Friends of Udayan Care programme was launched, whereby we are requesting donations of Rs. 1000 annually to support our various projects.
We also released a souvenir on the occasion. Our progress in this decade is documented in the souvenir.
