Our programmes like Udayan Shalini Fellowship, Information Technology programme, etc nurture every aspect of a student’s development. Moreover, to instill a desire to give back to society, our students are required to perform mandatory hours of social work.

Our 60 Shalini fellows from Dehradun chapter conducted a Social Awareness Campaign on “Anti–Child–Begging”. Shalinis adopted a three-stage approach consisting of discouraging public from giving to beggars, encouraging parents of child beggars to send their children to school and making them aware of the government’s free education schemes & providing assistance to enable beggars to change their disordered lifestyle. Our Shalinis visited Bindal slum and encouraged the parents to send their children to schools instead of sending them to beg. They distributed pamphlets to make people aware about this social evil.
There were mixed responses from people of the slum but a few of our Shalinis were able to convince the parents about the importance of education and discourage them from sending their children for begging.

Similarly, our 60 IT students from Badarpur centre organized a tree plantation campaign at Tughlakabad forest, along with Teach for India (a CSR initiate by Times of India) team. More than 35,000 people from different NGOs participated in this campaign and planted trees in the forest.

35 Shalinis organized a “Walk for Freedom”-social awareness rally, as a part of iPartner India’s #every8minutes national campaign at Jama Masjid, Old Delhi. The symbolic rally was on behalf of thousands of young women and girls who are enslaved and trafficked across the country.  The Shalinis marched on the streets of Jama Masjid, displayed banners, recited slogans, and interacted with locals. Shalinis explained people the significance of the rally and the relevance of the Helpline Number 1098 for emergency situations such as when the girl is with strangers.

It was an overwhelming experience, first, being the part of a cause that truly is one of the major but overlooked issues of our society and second, that I developed a sense of confidence when I was leading my group by reciting slogans to ensure that the energy doesn’t drop down till we reach the destination. I will not restrict the knowledge gained from the rally to myself only; instead I will spread the campaign to my family, locality and college. I am so contended with the fact that I got this opportunity to be one of the members of this drive”
