Udayan Ghar I, Sant Nagar, New Delhi

Walk to the end of the 'Mandir Wali Gali' in Sant Nagar, in South Delhi, right before the green MCD nursery and you've arrived at a building; on its raised ground floor is housed Udayan Ghar I for girls. 12 girls, ranging from ages 7 to 20, live here in this three-bedroom flat.

Climb up the stairs and walk-in to a round of cheerful 'Namaste’. Here's their drawing room where their visitors are received. Next is the Day room, that is where maximum activities are: the dance classes, music and art classes as well as tuitions; this room also acts as the essential group therapy room as well as used for individual Counseling. On the self is their huge stock of board games, music system and their colour TV set as well as their Harmonium; the cupboards house their computers as well as their well-stocked library.

On the other side of the visitors' room is the dormitory, with nicely polished bunk beds and brightly painted lockers. Next to the dorm is the open kitchen with cooking area and eating area. Children eat on the table together like a family.

Two Mentor Mothers a Mentor Father and an in-house Supervisor mentor these girls. Since this home is in a busy neighbourhood, we receive a lot of neighbourhood support as well as volunteers. Children, besides studying, are always looking forward to learning new things, meeting different kinds of people as well as helping in the household chores.

We are really grateful to Sanskriti School and Tagore International School for taking our children in their prestigious schools to educate them with total fee waivers and developing them into productive citizens of tomorrow. Some children, who have come to us quite grownup are studying through the open school system and Government School system. Our special child attends a special school.
