Udayan Ghar II, Mayur Vihar, Delhi

East Delhi's Mayur Vihar is where the Udayan Ghar II for boys is located. The area is what you'd call the spiritual heartland of the middle class in Delhi.

The Ghar is in a modest 3 bedroom, ground floor flat in a quiet part of the colony, just off the main thoroughfare. It takes the kids less than a minute to reach the Ghar, from the point where their school bus drops them off. If you enter from the front of the flat, you come through a courtyard where the boys play.
All the 16 boys, between ages 8-17, spend most of their time in the main hall when they come back from school. This hall serves as a dining hall cum living room cum study room. Posters brighten the wall. Shelves full of books, desktops and chairs all covered with study materials, while their owners take a break in your honour! The room is decorated much the same way any middle class sitting room with a bundle of kids would be. There's a harmonium in the corner for music lessons on Sunday and a TV set for evening viewing. The next room is the computer room, which also doubles as individual counselors area, and sometimes used for a foreign volunteer to stay in.

The rest of the place: a clean kitchen – stone slabs and steel utensils gleaming; the bedrooms with the bedding layered neatly on the beds. All the kids' clothes are put away in the cupboards and the closets. In the front, is a little vegetable garden that catches the afternoon sun.

There is a nearby park, a great attraction for our sports loving boys. Being in the midst of the colony, the Home gets a lot of volunteers. Children are getting beautifully integrated in the neighbourhood.

There are two Mentor Mother a Mentor father, one supervisor and two caregivers to help the children, besides the tutors and volunteers to help them in their studies and co curricular activities.

We are really lucky that we have found partners in the neighbouring private schools, who are supporting us in our mission in the education of the children through total fee waivers and nurturing our children in their care: Mother Teresa Public School and Universal Public School. Our special children in this Home go to a special School. One of our children has found admission in a hostel in Rishikesh, called Nirmal Deepmala Pagarani School. One of our children is studying through Open School and is also placed in vocational training. Another has finished his training and is now a permanent employee in a healthcare unit. He has now shifted to a place near his workplace and is staying there independently.
