Expansion of the Aftercare Research in Rajasthan and the Jaipur Inception Consultation

Children entering Alternative Care need to exit care homes on reaching 18 years of age and live independently, that unfortunately only leaves them vulnerable to further traumatic experiences and face pitfalls like credit problems, unemployment, homelessness, etc.

To address this issue of Aftercare, Udayan Care initiated a multi city national level CAP (Current Aftercare Practices) research in 2017. Having covered Maharashtra and Karnataka already, the CAP research is now launched in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

A one-day training workshop was organized in Jaipur on September 24, 2018, where the CAP teams from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra joined.

To launch the research in Rajasthan, a one-day Inception Consultation was held on September 25, 2018, to formally introduce the CAP study and understand the status of current aftercare practices in the state with support from Child Resource Centre, UNICEF and Tata Trusts.

Approximately 60 delegates participated, which included government functionaries, experts in the field of child protection, personnel of CCIs, UNICEF, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (SJE), and the Department of Child Rights (DCR). Three FGDs (Focus Group Discussions) were also part of the event, giving rise to many conversations around aftercare practices.

Aftercare Outreach Program – CLAN Training – Job Preparedness

CLAN is a Care Leavers’ led independent group that would represent, support and advocate on behalf of Care Leavers in Delhi. The idea is to build a common platform for millennials coming out of alternate care settings to join hands for the benefit of all care leavers.

Subsequent to the issues identified in our regular meetings and outreach sessions with CLAN members, a one-day training on Job Preparedness was organized at Udayan Care Head Office on September 21, 2018.

Mr. Abhishek Mathur, an expert from the Private sector, co-facilitated by Ms. Suman Kasana led the training. They further gave insights from their individual experiences, to eradicate any feeling of discrimination amongst the care leavers.

The session sought to address queries raised by CLAN members concerning various aspects of job preparedness, like Resume Writing, Online Job Search, creating LinkedIn Profiles, etc. Additionally, the session aimed to provide the members with better understanding and train them to further facilitate such sessions for other young adults like themselves.

Workshop on Making of Organic Ganesha Idol from Shadu Mitti

Festivities have a major role in Indian culture. However, much debate goes into its sustainability component. Today, the huge disposal of non-biodegradable products, both on land and water, have affected our climate to an unfathomable extent.

On September 13, 2018, the nation celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi. Prior to which, Ms. Manisha Chaudhari conducted a workshop teaching the art of making eco-friendly Ganesha idols, ensuring environmental protection.

Ms. Chaudhari further acquainted the Shalinis with the hazardous impact of reckless immersion of idols made of chemical materials like Plaster of Paris, leading to significant water pollution, affecting the vegetation and life underwater.

Post the workshop, Shalinis were able to beautifully design Lord Ganesh’s idol. Additionally, they further acquainted their friends and family members about the harmful effects of the use of thermacol and plastic in pandals as well as how it contributes to an increase in non-biodegradable waste; promoting eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi.

Presentation at the EUSARF (European Scientific Association on Residential and Family Care for Children and Adolescents) 2018 XV International Conference, 2 to 5 October 2018

Our efforts to bring After Care as a concept to the fore led us to 2018 XV International Conference- EUSARF (European Scientific Association on Residential and Family Care for Children and Adolescents)

Our Managing Trustee, Dr. Kiran Modi shared the findings of the Delhi Current Aftercare Research Study: A Comparative Study on Key Aspects of Life for Aftercare Receivers and Non-Receivers – A Case Scenario of New Delhi, India

Dr. Kiran Modi also presented a session on “Leaving Care - A South Asia Perspective” at the first open INTRAC meeting displaying the situation on Aftercare from a South Asian perspective. INTRAC (International Research Network on Transitions to Adulthood from Care) is a group of researchers from largely European universities, focusing on issues of Aftercare from 17 countries. This meeting was attended by almost 49 delegates involved in research on care leaving across Europe.

Thanks to Ms. Gerlinde Buechinger-Schmid for making this possible. With her sponsorship, the South Asian perspective has received an international recognition; opening up opportunities for more hands to join us in bridging the gap.
